Chapter Seventeen

“You do know it’s going to cause some alarm if I disappear in front of people on a regular basis, right?” I growl at my colleagues.

The three cloaked figures stand before me impassively. I really wish I could see their faces. Or know if they have faces at all.

“Are you ready to begin day two of your training?” they say in unison.

I sigh. It’s not as if I have a choice.

“We’ll take that as a yes. Get your cloak.”

And somehow, even though I know I left it in the dresser back at the loft, it’s hanging in the air before me. I swing it around my shoulders and pull the hood up over my hair.

The space around us shifts again and we’re standing in the giant room with the hundreds of thousands of glowing lights. Lights that are about to go out forever. It gives new meaning to the word dispatch.

“Today you’ll shadow one of us as we escort souls to the realm of Death,” they say.

One of the cloaked figures steps forward and gestures for me to follow. I guess they can’t spend further time tripling up on my training. Not that I can blame them, with the number of souls they reap every day.

“Do you have a name?” I ask as we separate from the other two and walk into the thick of the lights.

The being pauses a moment. Whether it’s in surprise that I would ask, or simply because no one has ever asked before, I’m not sure. Then it continues moving, and I think I’m going to be ignored before it calls over his/her/their shoulder, “You can call me Nine.”

Nine stops before a cluster of pulsing lights.

“These are past due?” I ask to confirm my understanding from the other day. It sounds weird, like I’m talking about a library book that has yet to be turned in.

Nine nods. “Let’s begin.”

Nine reaches out a pale, pale hand and curls their fingers inwards into a fist. The cluster of lights condenses until it’s the shape of a ball and also roughly fist sized. There’s a tiny bit of space between each spot of light. It looks like white, glowing pomegranate seeds. As the ball hovers in the air before us, Nine touches one of the lights with a fingertip.

It feels as if I’ve been sucked into a hurricane.

There’s a swirling of space around me, and then I’m swept into a tunnel of light. I spin down it, my stomach lurching. I’m pretty sure the quiche I ate is about to come back up. And then, it’s abruptly over, and I’m standing in a hospital room.

Nine is beside me. As I double over, clutching my stomach, Nine’s head turns to watch. I am not going to puke at this person’s deathbed, I am not going to puke at this person’s deathbed…

The moment passes and I straighten. “You could give me some warning next time!” I whisper to Nine.

Nine doesn’t respond. They’re looking at the figure on the bed.

It’s an old woman.
